The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has vowed to put an end to all forms of tyranny, hooliganism, and electoral violence in the state.
He assured that those responsible for the recent unrest in Iperu-Remo during the local government elections would face justice, regardless of their status or influence.
Governor Abiodun made this statement at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta on Sunday night while addressing the newly elected local government chairmen and their deputies.
“The era of hooliganism and thuggery must end in Ogun State,” he declared. “As the Chief Security Officer, I will ensure peace and order prevail. The events in Iperu are being thoroughly investigated, and anyone found culpable—no matter their rank—will face the full weight of the law.”
The governor condemned the actions of individuals who imported unauthorized security operatives to disrupt the electoral process. He revealed that some culprits had hired thugs and illegal policemen to cause chaos, including an attack on a local government vice-chairman in his hometown.
“Those illegal operatives have been disarmed and are now in custody at Eleweran. This impunity must stop. I will not allow Ogun State to be turned into a lawless territory,” he warned.
Governor Abiodun also commended law enforcement agencies for foiling attempts to disrupt the elections. “Despite the actions of these troublemakers, their plans were thwarted. I appreciate the efforts of our security agencies in maintaining order,” he said.
Swearing-in Ceremony and Development Agenda
On Monday, the governor formally swore in the newly elected local government chairmen at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta.
He charged them to focus on delivering the dividends of democracy to the grassroots and urged them to adopt policies that improve the lives of their constituents.
“As the closest tier of government to the people, your role is critical. Formulate policies and implement programmes that positively impact the lives of our citizens. The trust placed in you must be justified by your actions,” he advised.
Governor Abiodun described the peaceful conduct of the election as a reflection of the people’s confidence in his administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC). He encouraged the new chairmen to align with the state government’s ISEYA agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure, social welfare, education, youth empowerment, and agriculture.
“You have been chosen for this responsibility by divine will. Serve diligently and ensure that development reaches every corner of your councils,” he urged.
Security, Revenue, and Leadership Mentorship
The governor also emphasized the importance of security in their respective councils, urging collaboration with law enforcement agencies, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
He advised the chairmen to innovate in revenue generation for their councils and to mentor future leaders to sustain their legacies.
“The elections are over. You are now leaders for all, regardless of political or ethnic affiliations. Uphold fairness and inclusivity in your governance,” he charged.
Chairman’s Response
Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in chairmen, Hon. Olasile Odulate, the Chairman of Sagamu Local Government Area, expressed gratitude to the governor and the people of Ogun State.
He pledged that the local government leaders would uphold the principles of good governance and deliver impactful leadership to their communities.
“We are committed to justifying the confidence reposed in us. We will work diligently to ensure good governance and development across our councils,” Odulate affirmed.
