The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has scheduled local government elections for November 2, 2024.

ABSIEC chairman, George Chima, announced the date and election timetable during a meeting with political parties and other stakeholders in Umuahia on Saturday.

The elections, which will include both chairmanship and councillorship positions, will take place across 184 wards in the state. Mr. Chima emphasized the commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process, reassuring stakeholders that the right procedures will be followed.

Providing further details, Mr. Chima outlined the election timeline: political party primaries are set to be held between September 25 and October 4, with the submission of candidate lists scheduled for October 5 to October 7. Election campaigns are expected to run from October 18 to October 31.

Mr. Chima stressed the integrity and credibility of the current commission, describing it as a body of men and women dedicated to “changing the narratives” of local government elections in the state.

He also called on stakeholders to ensure that all political parties and candidates adhere to the rules and conduct themselves fairly throughout the election period.

“The commission is determined to make the elections free, fair, and credible, and to ensure that they are perceived as such,” Mr. Chima stated.

In his vote of thanks, Chimez Iwuoha, chairman of the state Inter-Party Advisory Council, pledged that the 19 political parties involved would work together to ensure the success of the elections.
