Cases of COVID-19 are rising in Nigeria. Although the federal government hasn’t announced a firm plan to lock down, individual states have started to take steps such as closing markets, schools and places of worship.

While COVID-19 is a serious disease and we should tackle it as such, we must do so with calmness and focus. We should never forget that if the situation is handled right, most people are not expected to die.

There are already more people suffering from other diseases, but COVID-19 has gained notoriety to such an extent that it cannot be ignored. Perhaps the biggest danger faced at the moment is Panic.

To control diseases such as COVID-19, it is critical that human behavior is controlled in a way that inhibits the spread of the disease. The challenge with panic is that people change their behavior erratically, they might even behave in a way that leads to the disease spreading or posing a different risk entirely to them and their communities.

It seems there is a part of the society that most individuals and government have neglected. The part which King Ambassador Habeeb Whyte has identified to be one of the key parts of the society. Following the distribution of surgical face masks and hand sanitizers to the less privileged on COVID-19, King’s Ambassador Habeeb Whyte has initiated “Operation Feed the Needy” in the state and has called on Youths in the state for more participation in their various communities.

When he was asked if he has any intention towards this initiative, he said; when I was here last week to distribute the hand sanitizers and surgical face masks, the people here made me understand that they are hungry that it is food they need as they wouldn’t be consuming the face masks and sanitizers that was distributed to them.

This made me come up with this initiative and to call on the Youths to participate since the government is engaged in other activities. I would be feeding the less privileged at a particular day of the weekend till the end of COVID-19. As much as we are stocking food up for consumption, we must remember that there are persons that do not have anything to eat before the emergence of COVID-19. I know life would be more difficult for them during this period. Hence, the need to embark on this initiative, he added.

The King’s Ambassador concluded that he would be setting up a Food Bank System wherein raw food stuffs would be stocked up for the less privilege. If truly Nigeria is going to lockdown sooner or later, there is a need to stock up food for the needy. As much as we are fighting for our own survival, we must not forget the needy. He concluded.
