The National Examinations Council (NECO) has taken further steps to expand its international operations by accrediting additional schools in Niger Republic and Equatorial Guinea for the conduct of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Public Relations, Azeez Sanni, highlighted NECO’s commitment to broadening its scope and strengthening its global presence. He said, “Determined to broaden its horizon and expand its global presence, the National Examinations Council has accredited more foreign schools to write the Senior School Certificate Examination and the Basic Education Certificate Examination.”

The statement further explained that the accreditation process involved a detailed evaluation of the schools’ facilities to ensure compliance with NECO’s standards. “NECO accreditation team visited the schools to assess their readiness to write the SSCE and BECE. The team inspected classrooms, laboratories, libraries, computer laboratories, workshops, examination halls, and sports facilities to determine their adequacy and suitability for NECO examinations. After a thorough evaluation and comprehensive assessment, the schools were granted full SSCE and full BECE accreditation status,” the statement read.

This initiative follows a similar move last year, which saw NECO accrediting centers in Niger Republic, enabling Nigerian students residing there to sit for its examinations. The newly accredited schools add to the growing list of NECO examination centers in Benin Republic, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger Republic, Equatorial Guinea, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In another development, the council revealed that candidates are currently participating in the ongoing NECO SSCE External in Diffa, Niger Republic. “The UNHCR School in Diffa, Niger Republic, has become the first NECO SSCE External Center outside Nigeria,” Sanni noted.
