The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, has emphasized the importance of continuous training for legislative staff as a means of enhancing service delivery and advancing good governance in a democracy.
He highlighted that equipping legislative personnel with modern skills and global best practices is essential for achieving the legislature’s vision and goals.
Elemide made this statement while declaring open an in-house training session for Assembly staff at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
He described the training as a strategic initiative aimed at aligning the Assembly workforce with current global trends in legislative business, ultimately fostering innovation and excellence in governance.
“Human capacity building for our legislative workforce is indispensable. These staff members are the engine room of legislative operations, and equipping them with international best practices will significantly boost productivity and quality service delivery,” Elemide remarked.
He further stressed the need for staff across all cadres to stay updated on evolving trends in legislative practices. According to him, the in-house training was organized specifically to enhance their efficiency and productivity.
The Speaker also assured the Assembly staff of continued welfare improvements and commended the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for prioritizing the wellbeing of legislative workers. “The Governor has shown great commitment to creating a conducive working environment and fostering capacity development programs for the legislative staff,” Elemide stated.
During the training, the Resource Person and former Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. Agbolade James Talabi, delivered a presentation on “Rudiments and Distinctiveness of the Parliament.” Talabi emphasized the critical role of a well-trained workforce in legislative processes, describing the legislature as “the voice of the common man in any democracy.”
Speaking further on his paper titled “Practices and Ethics in the Legislature,” Talabi urged staff members to uphold integrity, diligence, loyalty, and mastery in their duties. He also commended the administration of Prince Dapo Abiodun for redesigning the State House of Assembly Complex to meet international standards.
Responding on behalf of the participants, the Director of Information, Mr. Jamiu Lawal, expressed gratitude to the Assembly leadership for organizing the training. He assured that the officers would leverage the knowledge gained to enhance their productivity and contribute more effectively to the Assembly’s goals.
