President Bola Tinubu awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a bilateral meeting at the State House in Abuja on Sunday.
The GCON, one of Nigeria’s highest national honours, was bestowed upon Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his exceptional leadership and as part of efforts to strengthen the ties between the two nations.
During the ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized the significance of the Nigeria-India relationship, describing it as a partnership that must be deepened and redefined for the mutual benefit of both countries. He stated, “Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries.”
He continued, “You represent a very strong commitment in democratic values and norms, and you have been doing a good job historically. Winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much.”
Tinubu then announced, “I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s National Honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger. This is to signify Nigeria’s appreciation and commitment to India as a partner.”
In response, Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences over the recent devastating floods that affected several parts of Nigeria, including Maiduguri, Borno State.
Demonstrating India’s solidarity with Nigeria, he pledged 20 tons of relief materials to support the Nigerian government’s humanitarian efforts.
Modi said, “This gesture underscores India’s solidarity with Nigeria under the Tinubu-led administration.”
