Voters in Ogun State turned out on Saturday to elect chairmen and councillors for the state’s 20 local government areas and 236 wards.
However, the election faced disruptions due to the delayed arrival of voting materials, despite a strong presence of security forces throughout the state.
In several polling units across Sagamu and Ikenne local government areas, voters who had arrived early had to wait for election materials and officials from the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) before the voting could begin.
Although the election was scheduled to start at 8:00 AM and conclude by 2:00 PM, the process was delayed, with voting not commencing until 10:30 AM due to the late arrival of the necessary materials and officials.
At Polling Unit 2 in Ita Osanyin, Iperu town, located in Ikene local government area, election materials arrived promptly at 10:30 AM, and voting began shortly afterward. Governor Dapo Abiodun cast his vote at 1:24 PM at the same unit. Voting also began at 10:30 AM at Polling Unit 3 in Ward 3, Iperu town.
Despite the delays in certain areas, polling units in other cities like Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, Sagamu, Ota, and Ilaro experienced timely arrivals of election materials, and voters expressed confidence that the election would proceed without further issues.
By the time this report was filed, there had been no incidents of voter harassment or ballot box snatching.
The election saw participation from major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
After casting his vote at Polling Unit 2, Iperu, Governor Abiodun praised the security forces for their commitment to ensuring a peaceful election.
