President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has posthumously conferred the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) honour on the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, recognizing his bravery, loyalty, and exceptional service to the nation.

Tinubu made the announcement during his remarks at Lagbaja’s burial at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja, describing him as a trusted advisor and a man who exemplified the highest ideals of patriotism and military professionalism.

“As an eternal symbol of our appreciation, I have granted the late Chief of Army Staff the posthumous National Honor of Commander of the Federal Republic of Niger, CFR,” Tinubu stated. “I invite his wife, Maria, to collect the posthumous Honor of Commander of the Federal Republic of Niger.”

The president expressed deep admiration for the late army chief, calling him “a trusted advisor whose formidable intellect and breadth of knowledge served this nation well.” Tinubu praised Lagbaja as a man of prudent action who deeply cared for the nation and the soldiers under his command.

“Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja symbolized the best of his profession. He was a true soldier, a general, and an officer whose commitment to the nation he loved was singular and undiluted,” Tinubu noted.

Highlighting Lagbaja’s understanding of the military’s role in protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and constitutional democracy, Tinubu remarked, “He was more than I could have hoped for. He was one of my best appointments. Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja embodied the finest ideals of a patriot and a soldier.”

A Legacy of Service

Tinubu also acknowledged Lagbaja’s valour and dedication to the welfare of soldiers and their families. “He displayed uncommon valour in the discharge of his duty and in the administration of the rank and file, for he cared about their welfare and that of their families,” he said.

The president expressed the nation’s loss but encouraged all to celebrate the legacy of the late general. “Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja, our nation has indeed lost a regent who truly distinguished himself as a thoroughbred professional soldier. Though his departure could cause great dismay, late Lagbaja would not want sorrow to overtake us.”
