The tragic incident occurred when the young men, who had traveled to the town to attend a burial ceremony, decided to swim in the Osun River along Ajido, Ikoro Road, Okemesi.

Local sources report that the victims were unfamiliar with the river, and their excursion into the waters proved fatal.

Confirming the incident, Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sunday Abutu, said, “A distress report received on 10/11/2024 indicated that on that same day, a 23-year-old and a 25-year-old, both natives of Okemesi-Ekiti, went to River Osun along Ajindo/Idoile Road to swim with two friends who had traveled from Lagos State to attend a burial in Okemesi. Tragically, all four young men drowned.”

He added, “The bodies have been recovered and deposited in the morgue, and investigations are ongoing to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
