• says Democracy Thrives on Choice
Abeokuta, Ogun State – Olalekan Alex Shoyinka, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) chairmanship candidate for Abeokuta South Local Government, has taken a firm stand against recent remarks by Governor Dapo Abiodun, who suggested that the opposition’s presence in the upcoming local government elections is minimal due to his administration’s achievements.
Shoyinka described the governor’s comments as “out of touch with reality,” arguing that the people of Ogun State remain deeply aware of the challenges and unmet promises in many communities.
“While the administration talks of impactful projects and innovation, numerous areas across Ogun State continue to face poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, and limited grassroots development,” he said.
Shoyinka warned that Governor Abiodun’s statement not only diminishes the role of opposition in a democratic setting but also raises concerns over the fairness of the November 16 local government elections.
“If the opposition is as irrelevant as claimed, why the need to dismiss us? Let the electorate judge candidates on their merits,” he asserted.
Highlighting that democracy thrives on choice, Shoyinka urged voters to use the upcoming election as an opportunity to voice their dissatisfaction and choose leadership that genuinely prioritizes community welfare.
“The election is not a coronation ceremony for the ruling APC,” Shoyinka emphasized. “It’s a chance for the people to reject mediocrity and vote for leaders focused on their needs, not political fanfare.”
Calling on residents of Ogun State, particularly in Abeokuta South, Shoyinka encouraged citizens to come out en masse on November 16 to make their voices heard.
“This is a time to remind those in power that ultimate authority rests with the people,” he added.
In his concluding remarks, Shoyinka stated, “The ADP is here to offer a real choice, advocating for genuine progress and sustainable development at the grassroots level.”
