Former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, has urged the Nigeria Guild of Editors to help resolve the leadership crisis within the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over allegations regarding the president’s tenure.

Speaking at the All Nigeria Editors Conference, Osoba expressed concern that the unresolved dispute could affect the unity and credibility of Nigeria’s journalism community.

During his remarks, Osoba highlighted that the NUJ was scheduled to hold its annual conference, but controversy has arisen as some members claim the president has exceeded his tenure.

“Before you leave, I want you to set up a committee to look into the crisis brewing in the NUJ,” he appealed to the editors in attendance, stressing that a prompt intervention was necessary to protect the integrity of the union.

Osoba pointed out that editors, as one of the most united groups in Nigeria’s media landscape, could play a critical role in mediating the conflict, second only to the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN).

“You are the only united group after the NPAN to intervene in that crisis brewing in the NUJ,” he said, urging the Guild to help prevent further divisions within the union.

The tenure dispute, which has reportedly led to internal friction and even legal challenges, reflects broader governance concerns within the NUJ.

Osoba’s appeal underscored the importance of resolving these issues to maintain the unity and strength of Nigeria’s press associations, essential for upholding journalistic integrity.

The former governor’s comments highlight a commitment to a cohesive journalism community, which he believes is key to fostering a credible, independent press that can serve Nigeria’s democracy.

He underscored the need for a resolution that preserves the trust and unity necessary within the media sector.
