In a heartfelt concession speech delivered at Howard University on Wednesday evening, United States Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris formally acknowledged President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election.
Addressing a gathering of supporters at her alma mater, Harris affirmed her commitment to a peaceful transfer of power.
“Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory,” she shared. “I also told him that we will help him and his team with their transition and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.”
Harris, who had aspired to secure the presidency, urged her supporters to come to terms with the election outcome, highlighting the need for acceptance and unity. “Folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now, I get it. But we must accept the results of this election,” she stated, encouraging her followers to move forward despite any disappointment.
The Vice President’s concession speech took place at Howard University, initially planned as the site for a victory rally. The shift underscored the emotional weight of the event as Harris faced her supporters following her loss to Trump. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude and resolve: “My heart is full today — full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for our country, and full of resolve.”
Acknowledging the loss, Harris reiterated her unwavering belief in America’s enduring promise, even amid defeat. “The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for. But hear me when I say: The light of America’s promise will always burn bright.”
Harris also used the moment to rally Democrats around their shared goals, emphasizing that her concession did not signify an end to her dedication. “While I concede this election,” she declared, “I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.”
In closing, Harris passionately promised to keep fighting for a future where Americans can pursue their dreams and aspirations. “I will never give up a fight for a future where Americans can pursue their dreams, ambitions, and aspirations,” she said, adding that America “will never give up the fight for our democracy.”
