Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a new minimum wage of N80,000 for state workers.
The announcement was made on Wednesday through a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade.
According to Oyelade, the wage increase follows recommendations from a technical committee composed of both government and labour representatives.
This committee was tasked with implementing the revised salary structure, which will take effect once the consequential adjustment process is completed.
“This new scale will be implemented as soon as the consequential adjustments process is completed by the committee, which comprises Government and Labour top officials,” Oyelade assured.
Highlighting the state’s reputation for being employment-friendly, Oyelade noted that Oyo State had recently been recognized by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) as the most worker-friendly in Southern Nigeria.
This recognition comes after a significant reduction in unemployment, attributed to extensive hiring across various sectors.
The Commissioner also commended Governor Makinde’s consistent commitment to timely salary payments. Since assuming office in 2019, the governor has ensured that workers’ paychecks are issued promptly on the 25th of each month.
Oyelade further elaborated on the governor’s dedication to worker welfare, recalling that when Governor Makinde first took office, he introduced a minimum wage of N30,000 and implemented measures such as regular pension payments, gratuities, and a 13th-month bonus for workers and retirees.
Since November 2023, the governor has also been providing a welfare supplement, offering N25,000 to active workers and N15,000 to pensioners in response to the financial strain caused by the federal government’s fuel subsidy removal.
