The Federal Government has disbursed funds to settle the outstanding salaries of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) members at federal universities, as well as to clear the backlogs owed to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.
This announcement came from Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, on Saturday.
Mokwa confirmed that the payment process has already begun for NASU members, with numerous beneficiaries acknowledging receipt of the funds.
“The Federal Government has released funds for payment of the withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities and that of the retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme,” Mokwa stated.
He added, “Payments to the Non-Academic Staff of Federal Universities have commenced, and many have confirmed receipts.”
The release follows an indefinite strike declared by NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) Joint Action Committee, which commenced Monday, over a four-month delay in salary payments.
This industrial action has disrupted operations across affected universities, with some institutions joining in solidarity.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive to expedite the payment, the continued delay had heightened tensions, leading SSANU to warn of further action if the issues remain unresolved.
