The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, has confirmed that the body of Monday Arijo, a student of Obada Grammar School in Obada, Imeko Afon Local Government Area, has been released to his family following the completion of an autopsy.

Arijo had reportedly undergone corporal punishment that involved 24 strokes of the cane and 162 frog jumps, administered by a teacher, allegedly leading to his collapse.

The student was taken to multiple hospitals after the incident but ultimately passed away, with his death allegedly linked to complications from the punishment.

The state government has since closed the school and suspended its Principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, who had previously been issued a query for permitting corporal punishment in violation of state regulations.

In a briefing with journalists on Friday in Abeokuta, CP Alamutu stated, “The autopsy has been concluded, and the corpse has been released to the family.”

He declined to disclose details of the autopsy results but assured that investigations were progressing, adding, “In the next few days, we will give you a full update on the outcome of our investigation so far.”
