A fatal accident claimed the life of a bus driver, leaving two others unharmed, after a bus loaded with sacks of potatoes rammed into the rear of a moving truck early Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred at about 5:40 a.m. between the RCCG Car Park C and the Mowe axis on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The vehicle involved, a Mazda bus with registration number YYY 735 XB, was reportedly headed towards Lagos when it crashed into a Sine truck with number plate DKD 60 XA from behind.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, revealed that an eyewitness attributed the crash to speeding and loss of control by the bus driver.

Akinbiyi explained, “According to an eyewitness, excessive speed by the Mazda bus driver and loss of control led him to ram the bus into a moving truck from the rear.”

The driver of the Mazda bus was said to have died on the spot, while the two other occupants of the vehicle escaped without injuries.

TRACE officials, alongside operatives from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were promptly dispatched to the scene to evacuate the remains of the driver to a private morgue in Sagamu. They also managed the resulting traffic congestion caused by the accident.

“Traffic was affected at the time of evacuation, but normalcy has been restored with the efforts of TRACE operatives and FRSC,” Akinbiyi added.

In a statement, TRACE, FRSC, and the police expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased and urged drivers to refrain from excessive speed and night travel, citing the potential dangers.

They warned, “Drivers should avoid night travels and speeding due to its attendant consequences.”
