Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja to discuss the devastating tanker explosion that recently rocked the state, resulting in heavy casualties.

The meeting served a dual purpose: to welcome the President back from his annual leave and to present a detailed report on the tanker fire disaster, which has so far claimed 181 lives, left 80 people hospitalized, and impacted over 200 families.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Governor Namadi expressed gratitude to the President for the swift response to the tragedy. “This action taken by Mr. President has been appreciated by the people of Jigawa State,” he said, acknowledging the delegation that was sent to the state shortly after the incident.

The governor also provided updates on the state’s efforts to handle the situation, which include covering medical expenses for the injured and supporting affected families.

When asked about the cause of the high casualty figure, Namadi responded, “Are you asking God or asking me?”

In addition to ongoing recovery efforts, Governor Namadi noted that the state government has set up a high-powered committee, led by a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, to thoroughly investigate the cause of the explosion.

President Tinubu has also directed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident and come up with long-term solutions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

On the potential prosecution of those responsible, the governor said any legal action would depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
