The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has made it clear that there is currently no appointment for an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

This announcement was made in a statement by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, on Monday in Abuja.

Gusau emphasized that no such appointment exists, noting that the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, had just spoken with the current Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. He confirmed that Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja is on a well-deserved annual leave for 2024.

The Brigadier-General reassured the public that the armed forces are managed professionally, with all Service Chiefs fulfilling their constitutional duties. He clarified that Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is providing routine briefs to the COAS as per military protocol.

“The DHQ urges individuals spreading unfounded rumors to cease immediately,” Gusau stated. “The COAS is healthy and will soon return to his normal duties at the conclusion of his leave. Media organizations are advised to verify information with the appropriate authorities before publishing misleading news.”

Furthermore, the defence spokesman issued a warning to those advocating for a military coup, reminding them that such actions are considered treasonable under the Constitution.

The DHQ reiterated its commitment to preserving and advancing democracy and its loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. “The military remains focused on fulfilling its statutory responsibilities of safeguarding the nation’s integrity,” he added.

Gusau highlighted that the relative peace currently enjoyed in the country is largely due to the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) leadership.

“To this end, the AFN and relevant security agencies have been instructed to take necessary action against any individual or group calling for unconstitutional changes in the country. The CDS appreciates Nigerians for their support and prayers. Victory is assured,” he concluded.
