Fifteen individuals lost their lives in the Nibo community of Awka South local government area of Anambra State on Sunday.
The tragic event unfolded during the Onwa Asaa traditional festival, where community members had gathered to celebrate.
It was learned that a group of suspected cultists arrived in a Lexus SUV and opened fire at a restaurant filled with youths enjoying drinks and food. An eyewitness described the scene as “chaotic,” stating that approximately 15 young people were killed in the onslaught.
Although the motive for the attack remains unclear, initial assessments suggest it was likely cult-related. The incident occurred just a few meters away from the Governor’s Lodge in the neighboring Amawbia community.
The Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, labeling it as “cult-related.” He reported that the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has dispatched an Anti-Crime Police team to the area to restore order.
In a statement, SP Ikenga urged witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying the attackers.
“The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash today, 20/10/2024, in Nibo, Awka South LG. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action,” he stated.
He further added that preliminary reports on the incident remain incomplete and reiterated the importance of public assistance in identifying the perpetrators.
“Information sent in this regard shall be treated with utmost confidentiality. You can call the Command Control Room or the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),” SP Ikenga concluded.
