The Nigerian Police Force has announced the arrest and detention of 10,852 individuals across the country over the last three months for their involvement in various crimes, including kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery.
Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun revealed this at a meeting with senior police officers from the rank of commissioner and above in Abuja on Tuesday.
He highlighted that these operations were carried out between July and September, resulting in the recovery of a significant number of arms, ammunition, and vehicles.
“The arrests and detentions were made between July and September. During this period, we recovered 416 arms, 3,672 rounds of ammunition, and 178 vehicles. Additionally, 369 kidnapped victims were rescued,” Mr. Egbetokun disclosed.
He also noted a marked reduction in key criminal activities, including banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping, and cybercrime. “There has been a significant decrease in crime rates in several critical areas, and we remain committed to sustaining this progress,” he added.
Discussing the preparations for the upcoming November 16 governorship election in Ondo State, Mr. Egbetokun assured that the police force is fully prepared to ensure a secure environment for the election.
“As we gear up for the Ondo State off-cycle gubernatorial election, I urge all officers to replicate and build on the successes we achieved in Edo State. We must ensure a solid security framework, and our officers on duty must perform with the highest level of professionalism,” he stated.
The police chief also reaffirmed the force’s commitment to working closely with other security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and relevant stakeholders to guarantee the safety of lives and property before, during, and after the election.
Looking ahead to the festive period, Mr. Egbetokun outlined enhanced security measures for the remaining months of the year, commonly known as the “ember months,” a time often associated with increased criminal activity.
“As we proceed through the ember months, a period traditionally linked to heightened security challenges, it is vital that we remain vigilant. Enhanced flexibility and proactive policing are more critical than ever,” he emphasized.
He further stressed that criminals often exploit this season, making it essential for the police to stay ahead through strategic patrols, intelligence-led operations, and a community-centered approach to ensure public safety during the holiday season.
