Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has voiced his support for individuals aspiring to migrate abroad.
Speaking on Monday at the College of Nursing Sciences at St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital in Nkpor, Onitsha, he made a donation of N10 million to the institution.
While addressing the institution’s management and students, Obi encouraged the trainees to strive to become highly qualified medical professionals.
He noted that nursing services are in high demand and command lucrative salaries in advanced nations such as those in Europe and the United States.
Recall that many skilled medical professionals are partaking in the widely recognized ‘japa’ movement, seeking better working conditions and compensation overseas.
The term “japa,” which means to migrate, has become popular among various groups of Nigerians, including students and unskilled workers, flocking to economically prosperous countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and others.
Obi emphasized the crucial role of nurses in the healthcare system, asserting that they are often closer to patients and, therefore, more vital to their care than doctors.
He advocated for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to allow health professionals the freedom to seek opportunities abroad, arguing that this could enhance the nation’s foreign exchange through remittances sent back home by Nigerian expatriates.
“I support japa. I don’t believe in brain drain. Let people who want to leave the country leave,” he stated.
He added, “Nurses are highly sought after and well-compensated in London and America. I have consistently advised the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria not to prevent any of their professionals from departing the country. When they go there, they earn substantial salaries and remit part of their income back home, serving as excellent ambassadors for our country.”
Emphasizing his commitment to education, Obi remarked that knowledge, rather than oil, drives global advancement.
Rev. Fr. Dr. Basil Ekwunife, Coordinator of the Health Sciences of the Archdiocese, who represented Most Rev. Valerien Okeke, the Archbishop of Onitsha, commended Obi for his contributions to education.
He acknowledged that Obi’s support during his tenure as governor was instrumental in establishing the college and several others across the state.
He concluded by praying for God’s continued provision and reward for Obi’s efforts toward fostering a better society.
