In a significant move to further enhance Nigeria’s aviation sector, the Muhammadu Buhari Airport in Maiduguri has been upgraded to international status by the federal government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made the announcement during a meeting with Borno State Governor, Babagana Umar Zulum, in Abuja on Monday.
Keyamo emphasized the strategic importance of the North-East region, particularly Borno State, noting its role as a key commercial hub that links Nigeria to other countries.
“The North-East, and especially Borno State, has the potential to drive economic growth, and this international status for the Maiduguri airport will serve as a gateway for flights from the Middle East,” Keyamo stated.
He further disclosed that the airport will begin full international operations on January 1, 2025, adding, “Maiduguri has the infrastructure, population, and resources to support its elevation to an international airport. The airport’s capacity positions it to handle international traffic effectively.”
The minister expressed confidence that this development will unlock untapped economic potential in the North-East, particularly in Borno, paving the way for broader regional prosperity.
During the visit, the head of the ministry’s press unit, Odutayo Oluseyi, reported that Governor Zulum expressed his delight at the airport’s new status.
He commended the federal government for its dedication to transforming the aviation sector, saying, “This is an uncommon achievement that will benefit not only Borno State but the entire North-East region.”
Zulum assured Keyamo that North-East governors would support the smooth operation of the airport, providing the necessary political backing.
He further praised the improvements in Nigeria’s aviation industry, remarking, “The services in the sector have improved; anyone can attest to that. In terms of safety, we have witnessed remarkable growth. The federal government’s efforts are clear for all to see.”
He also urged the Nigerian government to fast-track efforts towards establishing a national air carrier, which, according to him, “will serve the best interests of Nigerians.”
