In a tragic incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a fatal accident involving a tanker with faulty brakes, leading to the loss of three lives.

The crash occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Second Rainbow area, inward Mile 2, along the busy Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, according to the LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

In an official statement signed by Taofiq Adebayo, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, the tanker, which lost control, crashed into two Volkswagen commercial buses and a Honda car with registration number KTU 223 GH.

“The victims, passengers in one of the Volkswagen buses, succumbed to their injuries at the scene,” the statement revealed.

LASTMA officers acted promptly, securing the area to prevent further incidents. “We handed over two of the deceased to security personnel at Festac Police Station,” the statement continued. It also confirmed that one of the victims’ families was present and took custody of their loved one at the scene.

Emergency services, including the Lagos State Fire Services and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), were dispatched to the site to provide support.

Expressing condolences, Mr. Bakare-Oki said, “We are deeply saddened by this loss. Tanker drivers must adhere to speed limits and prioritise safety, especially when carrying hazardous materials. Speed and safety must never be compromised on our roads.”
