The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that no lives have been lost in Lebanon amidst the intensifying conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. In response to escalating violence, the government has initiated plans to evacuate its citizens from the region.

This was disclosed in a statement released by Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Saturday. The statement highlighted the efforts of the Nigerian Embassy in Lebanon to safeguard its nationals during the ongoing crisis.

“The Federal Government has begun preparations to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon,” the statement read, adding, “It is pertinent to mention that no Nigerian life has been lost since the beginning of the conflict.”

The Ministry emphasized that it is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the continued safety and well-being of Nigerians in Lebanon. It also urged citizens in the conflict zone to remain cautious and follow embassy advice.

While the conflict remains volatile, the Nigerian government has been working since August 2024 to encourage voluntary evacuations, with commercial flights still operational. Many Nigerians residing in southern Lebanon, one of the most dangerous areas, have already been relocated to safer regions such as Beirut with the help of community leaders.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to reassure Nigerians that the Federal Government is engaging with relevant stakeholders and remains committed to the protection and safety of Nigerian nationals,” the statement continued, stressing that preparations for evacuation were well underway.

The violence between Israel and Hezbollah has rapidly escalated, with Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah strongholds and cross-border skirmishes turning into full-blown warfare. The situation has prompted the Nigerian government to act swiftly in ensuring the safety of its citizens.
