In a continuing investigation into bribery allegations involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), popular blogger Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, appeared before the House of Representatives Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions on Monday.

The panel was convened to probe serious accusations of corruption and misconduct within both agencies.

In a viral video that sparked public outrage, VeryDarkMan accused the EFCC of receiving a ₦15 million bribe from controversial social media figure and crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.

The blogger alleged that this payment was made to secure the dropping of money laundering charges against Bobrisky following his involvement in a naira-spraying incident in April.

In addition, the blogger claimed that Bobrisky had paid additional sums to secure preferential treatment during his six-month imprisonment.

These serious allegations have been denied by Bobrisky, who refuted any involvement in bribing officials to avoid prosecution or to receive favorable conditions during his time in prison.

NBA Calls for Independent Probe

In a separate development, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to conduct an independent investigation into the matter.

The NBA expressed concerns over the potential damage such allegations could inflict on the reputation of the country’s law enforcement and correctional institutions.

“The NBA believes that an independent probe is essential to restore public confidence in these institutions,” a statement from the association read.

Both the EFCC and the NCoS have vowed to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation and have expressed a commitment to transparency in addressing the accusations.

As the House of Representatives continues its inquiry, the public awaits further developments regarding these serious allegations of bribery and corruption within Nigeria’s justice system.
