President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a modest celebration for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, citing the nation’s current economic difficulties as the driving force behind this decision.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, revealed the president’s decision during a press briefing in Abuja. He explained that the low-key festivities align with the nation’s current economic challenges.

“In line with the mood of the nation, the President has approved that the 64th Independence celebration should be subdued,” Akume stated.

He further highlighted that the simpler commemoration aims to remind citizens of Nigeria’s enduring strength in unity, progress made despite obstacles, and the nation’s rich cultural diversity.

Akume noted that the celebration reflects the strides taken by Tinubu’s administration under the Renewed Hope Agenda, while also symbolizing a “beacon of a brighter future.”

This year’s schedule of events includes a World Press Conference, Special Juma’at Prayer, Inter-denominational Church Service, a Presidential Broadcast, and the 64th Independence Anniversary Parade at the Presidential Villa.

Notably missing from the list are the grand ceremonies typically associated with Nigeria’s Independence Day.

Akume acknowledged the economic difficulties affecting many Nigerians, pointing to government policies that have contributed to the current climate, including the removal of fuel subsidies.

He reiterated that President Tinubu’s administration sympathizes with the public. “The government is deeply aware of and empathetic to the economic hardships many Nigerians are facing,” he said, noting that the administration’s tough policy choices were necessary for long-term benefits.

Among the initiatives designed to alleviate the impact of these decisions, Akume highlighted the Presidential CNG Initiative, which includes the launch of thirty hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to reduce transportation costs.

He also announced the free distribution of CNG conversion kits to Nigerians and efforts to bolster small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Addressing national security, the SGF said that the government’s anti-insurgency efforts are yielding positive results, with many insurgents and bandits being neutralized or surrendering for deradicalization.

He also touched on ongoing efforts to address the challenges posed by recent flooding and initiatives to improve food security.

In conclusion, as Nigeria marks its 64th year of independence in the face of these challenges, Akume urged Nigerians to remain united and hopeful. “Let us stand together, resilient and optimistic about our shared future,” he appealed.
