The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two individuals suspected of supplying food items and weapons to criminal groups operating within the state.

The arrest was confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Toochukwu Ikenga, in a statement released on Wednesday in Awka.

According to Ikenga, one of the suspects was apprehended by a police-led joint security team during a routine patrol at the Pillar-Pole area of Aguata.

The suspect was found in possession of three bags of garri and a substantial quantity of gunpowder hidden inside the bags.

“Apart from the gunpowder which was concealed in ‘garri’ bags, one locally-made pistol and live ammunition were recovered from the suspect,” Ikenga revealed.

He added that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect was on his way to deliver the items to a criminal camp before being intercepted by the security forces.

In a separate operation, personnel from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad apprehended another suspect during a raid on a known criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

Acting on credible intelligence, the squad recovered a locally fabricated pistol along with two live rounds of ammunition from the suspect.

Both suspects are currently in police custody and will be prosecuted once investigations are complete, Ikenga confirmed.

CP Nnaghe Itam, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, reiterated his commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.

He emphasized that the command would continue to enforce strict measures to ensure the state remains inhospitable for criminal elements.
