The Nigerian Police have issued a stern warning to individuals without legitimate duties to refrain from participating in the monitoring process of the Edo governorship election.

This directive was made clear by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Frank Mba, who is in charge of election security, during a press briefing on Thursday in Benin City.

DIG Mba specifically highlighted that those who falsely claim to be media personnel, election observers, vigilantes, or members of private security organizations would be barred from the monitoring process. Only individuals officially accredited will be permitted to participate.

He stressed that violators of this directive would face consequences, including arrest if necessary. “We will hold people accountable who will infringe on the law. Our duty is to ensure a peaceful and violent-free election,” DIG Mba stated.

The police also reassured voters that they would enjoy robust security during and after the election scheduled for Saturday. The senior police officer warned potential troublemakers to steer clear, assuring the public that all necessary security measures had been taken to guarantee a violence-free election.

To strengthen these efforts, the police have established a collaborative synergy with the Army, Air Force, Navy, DSS, and other security agencies. Additionally, the use of sirens, political party emblems, walking sticks, umbrellas, or any objects that could be weaponized has been prohibited.

DIG Mba further advised journalists to be diligent in fact-checking any information circulating during and after the election, to prevent the spread of false news that could lead to disorder. He also provided a dedicated operational number for election-related issues, 07025000383, cautioning the public against misuse of the line through prank calls.
