A fatal accident in Maryland, Lagos State, claimed the life of one individual early Sunday morning, following a collision involving a fuel tanker and multiple vehicles.

According to eyewitness accounts, the tragedy unfolded when a fuel tanker crashed into 10 vehicles near Kresta Laurel Plaza.

Witnesses allege that the tanker driver was under the influence and driving at excessive speed when the accident occurred. “He had no idea he had rammed into the vehicles,” one witness recounted.

Another added, “The victim was trying to escape being hit. He jumped out of his car, but the tanker ran over him, crushing his head.”

Preliminary reports reveal that the driver of a Mack truck, bearing registration number KWL 923 XB and fully loaded with diesel, lost control while speeding towards Ojota. Despite attempts to apply the brakes, which were reportedly faulty, the truck collided with seven other vehicles, including both buses and cars, causing extensive damage.

Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Entertainment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), issued a statement confirming that LASTMA’s Rescue Team was the first on the scene.

“Our team responded promptly and called in emergency responders,” he said. The Lagos State Fire Service, LASAMBUS, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and officers from Anthony Police Station quickly arrived to assist.

Sadly, a passenger in one of the affected buses suffered fatal head injuries and died instantly. LASAMBUS personnel administered first aid to 17 injured individuals, who were then transported to nearby hospitals for further medical care.

The LASTMA Rescue Team swiftly cleared the wreckage, which included the diesel-laden tanker, to restore normal traffic flow and prevent further congestion.

The multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge in Maryland.

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a speedy recovery. “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this tragic accident. We remain dedicated to ensuring the safety of all road users in Lagos,” he said.
