The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed an immediate investigation into the alleged poor feeding of inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar.

This follows a disturbing video report on Facebook showing inmates being subjected to inhuman treatment and poor feeding.

The Minister described the incident as a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled worldwide.

He ordered a comprehensive and urgent investigation into the matter, stating that those responsible would be held accountable.

Tunji-Ojo warned that any lapses in food quality, sanitation, and inmate welfare would not be tolerated.

He emphasized that inmates must be treated with dignity and respect, and promised that the investigation’s findings would be made public, with necessary disciplinary actions taken.

“The service must ensure that inmates are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve”.

“I will not condone any form of maltreatment or neglect of individuals in custody”, the Minister said.

The investigation’s outcome is expected to be made public, with appropriate actions taken to address the situation and prevent future occurrences.

“The Minister’s directive is a step in the right direction, and we hope that it will lead to significant improvements in the treatment of inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre,” said a human rights activist.
