ABEOKUTA –  Ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir festival, prices of some basic food items have increased between five to 10 per cent in some markets in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Tropic Reporters correspondent, Ositelu Deborah who visited major markets in Abeokuta such as Kuto market ahead of the forthcoming Eid-el-kabir celebration was filled to its brim with both Muslims and Christian was seen at the market buying and selling in preparation for the Eid-el-kabir celebration.

Our correspondent reported that the prices of rice, beans, tomatos, vegetable oil, palm oil and other food items had increased.

It was gathered that the hike in prices of the items was done deliberately by the traders to get more gains during the festive period.

A tomato seller blamed it on the harsh economic situation in the country as well as the timing of the celebration, as it was not end of the month when civil servants would have been paid their salaries.

A trader from the market thereafter shown optimism that the prices would revert to normal almost immediately after the Eid-el-Kabir festival and added that the market was not just filled because it was a market day but was as a result of the festive season in town as everyone needs to get what they needed for the festival.
