The Federal Government has retracted its directive for civil servants to register for the purchase of a 50kg bag of rice at the subsidized rate of N40,000.

The retraction was announced in a new circular issued by Aderonke Jaiyesimi, Director of Human Resources at the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, on August 2, 2024. This internal memo, which was circulated to all directors and department heads, stated that the earlier directive had been withdrawn, with further details to follow.

Previously, the ministry had instructed civil servants to register through a Google form on the OHCSF website for the subsidized rice. Payment and distribution were to be managed by designated offices, with oversight by the Chairman of the Joint Union Council of the ministry to ensure transparency.

The initiative, aimed at easing living conditions, had included the establishment of purchase centers nationwide where a 50kg bag of rice could be bought for N40,000. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, had highlighted this program as part of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to improve citizens’ livelihoods.
