Three years after the Tokyo Olympics were held without spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus has resurfaced at the Paris Games, impacting several athletes.

Despite a more limited effect this time, the virus has led to withdrawals and renewed mask-wearing among competitors.

Australian swimmer Lani Pallister, a contender in the women’s 1500 meters freestyle, tested positive and had to withdraw. Her team stated that Pallister would conserve her energy for the upcoming 4x200m freestyle relay.

British swimmer Adam Peaty also tested positive shortly after narrowly missing out on the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke, earning silver instead. Peaty is focusing on a swift recovery to participate in relay events later in the week.

Australian women’s water polo players who tested positive had to isolate before their opening match, but the team successfully played against Serbia, winning 8-3.

Although Paris is hosting the first post-pandemic Olympics without stringent COVID-19 protocols, athletes are still advised to wear masks and follow best practices. The situation contrasts with the Tokyo Games, which were postponed due to COVID, and the Beijing Winter Olympics, which were held under strict precautions.

British swimmer Jacob Whittle and Canadian officials have emphasized enhanced hygiene practices, including hand sanitizing and mask-wearing, to mitigate the spread of the virus.
