Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, rejected the fundamental human rights lawsuit brought by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against the Federal Government.

Kanu had filed the suit (FHC/CS/1633/2023) seeking N1 billion in damages from the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Department of State Services (DSS), alleging rights violations.

He claimed that the DSS and its Director-General infringed on his right to a fair hearing by purportedly obstructing his lawyers from freely meeting with him during his detention, thus hindering his defense preparations for his criminal trial.

Justice Omotosho, in his ruling, stated that Kanu did not provide sufficient evidence to substantiate his allegations.

He concluded that there was no credible proof that Kanu’s interactions with his legal representatives were interfered with, or that the DSS monitored his conversations with them, which would have constituted a breach of his fair hearing rights.
