IGP Egbetokun Pledges Support for Arms Control, Expresses Concern Over Proliferation

The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has expressed concern over the proliferation of arms and ammunition in Nigeria, which he says poses a significant threat to national security and public safety.

He made this declaration during a visit by the Director General of the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, Johnson Kokumo, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Egbetokun acknowledged the impact of the Centre’s efforts but noted that more work needs to be done to achieve the Federal Government’s objectives.

He pledged the support of the Nigeria Police Force for the Centre, Pledging to collaborate in operations and activities aimed at ensuring peace and unity in the country.

The IGP emphasized the need for a multi-agency approach to tackle the proliferation of arms and ammunition, which he attributed to illegal arms trafficking, armed banditry, and terrorism.

He commended the Centre’s efforts in collaborating with local and foreign partners to develop robust, inclusive, and effective strategies.

Kokumo solicited increased support for the Centre’s goals of reducing armed violence, safeguarding communities, and ensuring a safer and peaceful future for Nigeria.

He highlighted the need for sustained awareness campaigns, community engagement, and capacity building for security agencies to effectively combat the menace.

The visit strengthened the partnership between the Nigeria Police Force and the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, committing to a shared vision of a safer and more secure Nigeria.
