In the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, a crucial piece of evidence has been presented in court.

The approval of former President Muhammadu Buhari for the redesign of the Naira currency has been tendered and admitted as an exhibit in the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.

The approval, dated October 6, 2022, was personally signed by Buhari and conveyed to the CBN, authorizing the redesign and printing of new Naira notes.

However, a former Director of Currency Operations at the CBN testified that Emefiele made significant changes to the design of the new notes without Buhari’s approval.

The testimony alleges that Emefiele’s changes included altering the portrait’s position and numbering style, and omitting the QR code feature.

The trial continues, with Emefiele facing charges for allegedly printing new Naira notes without proper approval.”
