The National Assembly has intervened in the dispute between the Federal Government and Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to prevent a nationwide indefinite strike action scheduled to begin on June 3, 2024.

The strike action was called due to a deadlock between the Federal Government and Labour Unions over a new national minimum wage and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

In a joint statement, Senate Spokesman Senator Yemi Adaramodu and House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. announced that the National Assembly leadership, comprising Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, is taking proactive steps to mediate the dispute.

The National Assembly acknowledges that both parties have valid reasons for their positions and is seeking a constructive dialogue to explore solutions.

The Senate and House Committees on Labour, Employment and Productivity, chaired by Senator Diket Plang and Rep. Adegboyega Adefarati, respectively, will engage with both parties to find a mutually acceptable resolution.

The 10th National Assembly is committed to ensuring fair representation of all parties’ interests and urges stakeholders to remain patient and cooperative as they work towards a resolution in the best interest of the country.
