Ibrahim Lamorde, Anti-Corruption Crusader, Dies At 61

Ibrahim Lamorde, the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria, has sadly passed away at the age of 61. His death occurred on Sunday morning in Egypt, where he had traveled for medical treatment.

Lamorde had a distinguished career in law enforcement, spanning over three decades. He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1986 and rose through the ranks to become a Deputy Inspector General of Police before his retirement in 2021. Throughout his career, he was renowned for his unwavering commitment to combating corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.

Lamorde’s tenure as EFCC Chairman began in 2011 under President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. He was initially appointed as Acting Chairman on November 23, 2011, and later confirmed as the substantive Chairman on February 15, 2012. During his time in office, he oversaw several high-profile investigations and prosecutions, earning both accolades and criticism for his assertive approach to tackling corruption.

Despite controversies surrounding his tenure, Lamorde remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s fight against corruption until the end of his tenure. He was replaced by Ibrahim Magu as the acting EFCC Chairman on November 9, 2015, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lamorde’s contributions to law enforcement and his efforts to promote accountability and transparency will be remembered by many. He is survived by his family, friends, and colleagues who mourn his loss and celebrate his dedication to public service. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
