A devastating bus accident on the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka road in Enugu State has claimed the lives of 16 passengers.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday at 5:20 pm when the 18-seater Toyota Hummer bus lost control and crashed into the fence of Maduka University.
The bus, which was traveling from Enugu to Nsukka, burst into flames, killing 14 men and two women on the spot. Two survivors were rescued and taken to the hospital for medical attention.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has visited the scene and described the accident as “sad and unfortunate.” He has appealed to anyone with information to help identify the victims or trace their family members to come forward.
The cause of the accident is still unknown, but investigations are ongoing. The police are working to determine if the crash was due to mechanical failure, driver error, or other factors.
The Enugu State Government has also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and promised to provide support to those affected.
The accident has raised concerns about road safety in the state, with many calling for improved measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus was traveling at high speed before it lost control and crashed. The impact was so severe that the bus burst into flames, trapping the passengers inside.
The rescue efforts were led by the police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and local residents. The survivors are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
The police have recovered the vehicle’s registration number, DAS 215 XA, and the inscription “Masha Allah” on the bus. They are working to trace the owner and driver of the vehicle.
The FRSC has also launched an investigation into the accident, with a focus on determining the cause of the crash and identifying measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
