Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for promptly signing the Students’ Loans (Access To Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2024 into law.
The previous Student Loan Act, 2023, faced shortcomings in governance, loan purpose, eligibility criteria, application process, repayment terms, and loan recovery methods. The amended law, signed by President Tinubu on April 3, 2024, aims to ensure sustainable higher education and skill development for Nigerian students and youths.
In a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu praised the President for addressing these issues, emphasizing the legislation’s importance in expanding access to higher education amidst challenges faced by young Nigerians.
Kalu highlighted the law’s significance in providing hope to many economically disadvantaged youths who previously lacked access to university education. He emphasized its potential to unlock opportunities and empower individuals to contribute to Nigeria’s development.
The Deputy Speaker urged students and youths to seize the benefits of the law, pursuing university education to secure a brighter future and contribute meaningfully to Nigerian society.
