The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC Osun State, Mr Olusegun Agbaje has lauded the scheme for the contributions of corps members during elections especially in the State. According to him “NYSC is a part of us. INEC would not have succeeded in handling elections without NYSC”. Agbaje who recalled his service year in the 70s with great nostalgia described the NYSC scheme as a very good scheme and an experience every Nigerian should have.

“If not for the NYSC, I wouldn’t know the fate of elections any longer as it has not been easy due to issues of security” he added.

Agbaje, who made the statement during the courtesy call of the NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Mr Adegoke Adewale to his office on Wednesday 24th July, also commended the scheme for deploying corps members to work in their commission and also as INEC ambassadors who have made voters education easier and more effective across the State.

Agbaje asserted that the courtesy visit was a very good initiative as it strengthens the already established relationship between the commission and the scheme.

He however, appealed to the management of the scheme to look into prohibiting institutions from rejecting corps members who were posted to them. In this light he said “It was not the intention of the founding fathers that corps members posted to stakeholders’ institutions should be rejected.

“It doesn’t sound fair if someone who left his/her home town to serve another state gets rejected as it discourages the corps members”.

Meanwhile, Mr Adegoke, the NYSC Osun State Coordinator, expressed gratitude to the INEC boss for prioritising corps members welfare and safety during the general elections and also for ensuring the prompt payment of election allowance to corps members and staff who participated as ad-hoc staff during the general elections in the State.
