Reading time: 2 Minutes

Concerned by the rising wave of insecurity in some parts of Ogun State occasioned by the rampant cases of robbery, cult clashes and other forms of criminality, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, has tasked the State Government to set machineries in motion towards ensuring the immediate formation of a state-wide surveillance and joint task force to include military operatives, men of the Nigeria Police Force and paramilitary formations.

Oluomo stated this while responding to the submissions of a member representing Abeokuta South II State Constituency, Ademuyiwa Adeyemi, his Odeda and Ifo II counterparts, Honourables Oludaisi Elemide and Ganiyu Oyedeji under Personal Explanations during the plenary held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The Speaker, who acknowledged that though the State security network code name “Amotekun” was presently being recruited, condemned the actions of some community leaders, who often engage in the unethical habit of canvassing for bail or standing surety for suspected cultist members and criminals when arrested by security agencies.

He equally tasked the law enforcement agencies to redouble their efforts at prosecuting anyone found disturbing the peace and orderliness of the State in line with the established laws, while stressing the need for members of the public to always avail the security agents with intelligent information to aid security operations.

In another development, a bill titled ‘H.B No. 060/OG/2020- The schemes of Service Law for Registrars, Process Servers and Change of Nomenclature of Messengers and Cleaners in the Judicial Service of Ogun State, 2020, scale second reading as lawmakers took time to debate the bill during the plenary.

Opening debate on the second reading of the bill, Hon. Solomon Osho, opined that the bill when operational would improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial arm of government as it was poised to change the nomenclature of some officials like bailiff to process servers, messengers to Office Assistants and cleaners to utility servers in line with international best practices, thereby raising the bar of performance through the adoption of the all-inclusive scheme of service to boost the moral of the workers.

Other members including Fasuwa and Adegoke Adeyanju, who took turn to contribute to the debate on the floor of the House shortly after a motion for the second reading was moved by Osho, seconded by Abayomi Fasuwa and supported by other lawmakers; submitted that the immediate passage of the bill would bring about the repositioning of the judicial arm at ensuring the effective dispensation of justice in the State.

Responding, Speaker Oluomo, stated that the bill was meant to increase dignity of labour, while boosting the moral of the judicial officials, whose roles and duties would be clearly defined and institutionalized; thereafter committed the bill to the Committee on Justice and Public Petitions for further legislative actions.
