A 30-year-old man, Olaniyi Sunday, was remanded in a correctional center on Friday by an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping a minor.

The defendant, whose address was not disclosed, faces a single charge of rape.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, informed the court that the defendant allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl between April and June in Araromi, Omuo-Ekiti.

Adeniyi stated that the defendant, a neighbor to the victim, caught her stealing meat from another neighbor’s pot and threatened to expose her unless she agreed to have sex with him. The victim was ultimately raped when she refused his condition.

The prosecutor requested the court to remand the defendant until legal advice is provided by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The defendant’s plea was not taken.

Chief Magistrate Dolamu Babalogbon ordered the defendant to be remanded in the correctional center pending the legal advice and adjourned the case to August 7 for mention.
