The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old scavenger, Dauda Saidu, for vandalizing graves and stealing iron rods from a Christian cemetery in the Yelwan Kagadama area of Bauchi.
The suspect was apprehended after engaging in the criminal act in broad daylight.
Confirming the arrest, Bauchi Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Muhammed Wakil, said, “On September 20, 2024, the Bauchi State Police Command arrested Dauda Saidu, a 21-year-old scavenger resident of Yelwa, for trespassing, vandalism, and theft. The detainee unlawfully entered a cemetery in the Yelwan Kagadama area of Bauchi, causing damage to several graves and removing iron rods during daylight hours.”
During interrogation, Saidu confessed to stealing iron rods and selling them to scrap buyers in various transactions. The amounts received from the sales were ₦9,500, ₦12,000, and ₦5,500. Saidu admitted that the proceeds were used to purchase Indian hemp and food items for his personal use.
Following the arrest, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Muhammad, directed that Saidu be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.
He also called on parents and guardians to exercise greater supervision over their children to prevent them from engaging in criminal activities.
The police emphasized the importance of parental vigilance, urging families to monitor the actions of their children and wards closely.
