The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, High Chief (Alh) Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi (JP) has charged residents of the council area to take advantages of the tree planting exercise in their respective environments for the benefits therein.

Egunjobi made this call in the address delivered on his behalf by the Leader of Agege Local Government Legislative Arm, Hon. Alliu Najeem Olohuntoyin during the 2023 Tree Planting Day, at the council Secretariat on Friday, 14 July, 2023.

H.C. Egunjobi stated that this year’s theme, “Let’s Green Our City” inspires a sustainable relationship between humanity and nature in order to maintain the aesthetic value of our environment.

He added that it is a way to synchronize with nature, and it is good to note that many Lagosians have become enthusiastic about tree planting

The statement reads in part, “Trees are astonishing, they capture carbon for the atmosphere, provide land cover, act as wind break, emit beneficial gases, add aesthetic value, slow down greenhouse gases accumulation, protect and fertilize soils and harbor many of the planet’s animal, birds and insects.

“The cultural, spiritual and recreational role of trees make them essential for the wellbeing of humans, hence, harmonising the relationship between man and nature. All of these benefits make us more resilient, despite economic and environmental shocks.”

While noting that the council has joined all stakeholders and key players and lovers of a safe, sound, healthy and sustainable environment to mark and celebrate the laudable event; the council chief maintained that it is expedient to know that safeguarding the environment is our collective responsibility, and efforts must be made by individuals, families, communities, organizations and the government to mitigate against the impact of climate change and other environmental stressors.

Corroborating the points raised by the council chairman include; the Council Manager, Mr. Dipe Adekunle; Mrs Aiye Obasa, Dep. Director of Environment, and the Chief Imam of Agege council area, Alhaji Hamzat Olayiwola; Chairman, Agege Christian Association of Nigeria.
