… identifies climate change as integral environmental menace
Deputy Governor, State of Osun, Mr Benedict Alabi, has called for renewed efforts towards scientific based approach to tackle the menace of food insecurity in Nigeria .
He maintained that researchers and other professionals in the field of soil management play significant roles in the quest for food security and clean environment, adding that the survival of humanity solely rests on this.
The Osun Deputy Governor, added that in the contest of the present challenges in the world such as climate change, especially in the developing nations like Nigeria, every remedy to sustain human existence must be science-driven.
He made this known on Tuesday in his opening remarks at the 45th Annual Conference of Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN), held at BOWEN University, Iwo.
Speaking on the theme of the Conference, “Understanding Soil Organic Matter Dynamics; Key to Sustainable Ecosystem, Health and Food Security”, Alabi described the topic as apt and germane.
According to him,”The phenomenon of Climate Change and the quest for favourable ecosystem to guarantee food security among others are some of the basic reasons why interrogations like this should be now”.
He noted that soil is dynamic, while emphasizing the need to devise means of attaining sustainable Ecosystem, Health and Food Security, in line with the first three goals of the MDG, which are:
No Poverty, Zero Hunger and Good Health and Wellbeing.
“Obviously, your contributions to healthy living and food security through sustainable ecosystem have tremendously helped humanity to survive and sustain existence despite daunting natural challenges.
“It is on that note that I consider the theme of the conference : “Understanding Soil Organic Matter Dynamics; Key to Sustainable Ecosystem, Health and Food Security”, as highly germane and apt in the contest of the present challenges in the world over.
“Especially in the developing nations like Nigeria, which include the issue of Climate Change and the quest for favourable ecosystem to guarantee food security among others.
“Soil organic matter dynamics play a major role in natural ecosystems and extensive agriculture, including its inherent potency to increase the efficiency of use of both soil and fertilizer nutrients”, Alabi asserted.
