The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 15 Maulud celebrants tragically lost their lives in an accident along the Kaduna-Saminaka Road in Lere Local Government Area.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Sunday when a J5 commercial bus with registration number NSL 08 AA collided with a DAF trailer, bearing registration number DKA 454 XY, near LEA Primary School in Lere.
Ahmad Dayyabu, an event organizer, initially reported to BBC Hausa that the “overcrowded bus” collided with the oncoming trailer, leading to an estimated 40 fatalities. However, the FRSC clarified that 15 individuals, including the bus driver Mukailu Musa, died on the spot.
The FRSC reported that a total of 63 people were involved in the accident. Over 43 injured individuals were transported to Comprehensive Hospital Saminaka for medical treatment.
FRSC Sector Commander Kabir Nadabo confirmed the details, stating that emergency services, including the police, Kaduna Law Enforcement Transport Authority (KASTLEA), and FRSC officials, were involved in the rescue and evacuation efforts. An updated report on the incident is expected to be released on Tuesday morning.
